Parking Woes at Motor City

Despite having ample dedicated parking spots in the basement, the residents continue to face challenges with disrespectful neighbors who park their cars on pavements and open spaces. Despite efforts of the community managers to maintain proper parking and safety of the residents, a few nieghbors do not want to take a little effort to park their cars in the designated spots in the basement and prefer to park in the open spaces at ground level. This problem is further compounded by guests or visitors who find it nearly impossible to find a parking spot in the community and hence end up parking on pavements.

So where does the issue lie?

Does this lie with the property developer who may have provided for significantly less parking spots for guests as compared to the number of apartments in the community?

Does this lie with the residents who do not take the effort to park their cars in the reserved parking spots that are provided for in the basements?

It is a shame that few neighbors have not respect at all for the others. I think the UP is making a lot of effort to improve the situation. But unfortunately they cannot chose the people who live here. And a few are morons

Hi,
Maybe I'm wrong but my perception of the parking issue is that each apartment has 1 basement parking space allocated therefore if a couple is living in an apartment and they both have a car then the second car has to be parked on the street, this results in there being no available visitor parking.

I don't think it's the case that people don't use the basement because of laziness. I can tell you that the basement in my block is full most of the time (allowing for people that work various hours and shifts) and I don't think anyone really wants to leave their car outside to get hot and dusty and dirty?!

Another issue are the cars (and speed boat!) that have clearly been abandoned for a long time and have not been removed. That would clear at least 5 spaces and there are probably more. They did stick a notice to them saying legal action would be taken if not moved by 4th Feb but they are all still sitting there making the neighborhood look run down and taking up valuable parking spaces.

Please correct me if I am wrong on any of the above as it would be good to understand the real issue and try to get it sorted if possible for everyone's benefit.

As pointed out by Russell Webb the issue is not the unwillingness of the residents to use their basement parking, it is the lack of appropriate amount of extra parking. This is a suburban community with underdeveloped public transportation network, many residents are working adults who have 2 cars. The recent rules forced by UP (side parking) only made the matter worse by reducing the spaces. Now only 18 cars can park at say Dickens circus while before it was 36. So where do you expect those extra 18 cars to park?? And yet the new rules did not solve any problem- mini buses, trucks and taxies are blocking the roads as they were doing so before...

What I just heard from the guys above is that causing inconvenience to other people in the community is fine because UP did not build adequate parking spots. I am not suggesting that it is easy to find parking but also not difficult if you bother to drive around the community and look for one. Having said that I agree that the community can do with more spaces and getting rid of some of the abandoned cars and boats may be a good start.

However what I cannot agree is that my neighbors sort out their problem by parking all over the pavements and cause another problem for others.
